Rob and Melani Walton Center for Planetary Health, Arizona State University
Sustainability Consulting Role: Developed holistic sustainability framework aligning with ASU campus goals, and stretch goals for the project including integrating biophilic design principles with quantifiable health and environmental outcomes. Coordinated with the interdisciplinary team including the full design team, health researchers, environmental scientists, and building performance specialists to create measurable wellness and sustainability metrics. Led the LEED Platinum certification process. (Work performed while at Thornton Tomasetti)
Climate-Positive Solutions Delivered:
Collected water fills retention basins, re-charges the aquifer and irrigates native landscape plantings
Healthy materials with Health Product Declarations eliminating VOCs
Bubble-Deck slabs to reduce the embodied carbon.
Courtyard expanded aluminum shade canopy, active design egress stairs and panelized facade system
Biomimetic GFRC panels for self-shading like a cactus
Rainwater and condensate harvesting for native landscape irrigation
Performance Outcomes:
LEED Platinum certification achieved
50% reduction in energy use based on the building design, combined with off-site PV integration
Use of native and adapted plant species on site has reduced landscape water needs
26% reduction in embodied carbon through sustainable construction practices
Irrigation water sourced from canal water, rainwater and condensate
The ASU Walton Center for Planetary Health, designed by Grimshaw + Architekton, establishes a new paradigm for academic facilities that directly connect human health outcomes with planetary sustainability, serving as both research facility and living laboratory
