Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences

Boothbay, Maine

The Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences by Perkins&Will + WBRC Architects & Engineers represents a 55,563-square-foot ocean research facility in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, dedicated to analyzing ecosystems of the world's oceans and their impacts on local and global environments. Named for Henry Bryant Bigelow, a pioneer of modern oceanography, this facility serves as the new headquarters for the private, non-profit research institution founded in 1974.

Sustainability Consulting Role: Provided comprehensive sustainability consulting targeting LEED Platinum and energy analytics for all phases of the oceanographic research facility project, working with the design team to optimize building performance for Maine's coastal environment while meeting specialized laboratory requirements for marine science research. The project achieved LEED Platinum. (Work performed while at Thornton Tomasetti)

Climate-Positive Solutions Delivered:

  • Three-wing building organization maximizing natural light through strategic solar orientation

  • Open courtyards between wings creating comfortable and energy-efficient work environments

  • Advanced daylighting design with window shading and daylight-responsive lighting controls

  • Dimmable ballasts and lighting systems optimized to reduce energy demand

  • Energy recovery and high-efficiency equipment throughout the facility

  • 66 rooftop photovoltaic panels providing 19.21 kW of renewable energy generation

Performance Outcomes:

  • LEED Platinum

  • 54% energy cost savings through high-efficiency equipment and energy recovery systems

  • 45% reduction in water use through high-pressure, low-flow fixtures
